After the first UEFA European Championship in 1960, it has become one of the long awaited events in the football calendar and with the UEFA Euro 2016 Championship due to kick off tonight in France, we thought it would be fun to make some comparisons between football and SEO.
So, where is the link between a football team and a website you may ask? Let’s strip it back a little…
Whether you are an avid follower of football, have a team that you support, just watch the occasional game or are not really too interested in football, it is a given that in order to challenge for the top spot there are some essentials that need to be met.
- Talented players are vital to the team. If you have the right players in the right positions, in the right formation you are in with a great chance of succeeding and going all the way.
- A football strip that represents your team’s colours, making you and your fans stand out from the opponents. recognisable from the other teams in the tournament
- A good manager will encourage the team, providing valuable tactics on how the players can up their game, and win the match.
- A referee (Google) who knows the game, knows the rules and is able to give your team, as well as the others a even playing field (excuse the pun).
So, here is where we can make the comparison to website optimisation…
As with the Euro’s there are many teams out there all vying to be number 1 in Europe, each team believes they have the right players & philosophy to challenge. Much like websites there are many out there that challenge for that top spot on Google but some never reach that level. Therefore it is essential to get your website to the final which is achievable, but again you need to have the right team involved to “get that goal”
Website optimisation or SEO is often misunderstood, as it can be an intricate process, behind the scenes.
Keywords as Team Players
Keywords are very much like footballers as you are working towards one ‘goal’. Think about that one goal you are working towards be it ranking for certain “keywords and phrases” - for example, is it your aim to be on the first page of google for a particular keyword or phrase? Each keyword could be considered as a player in the team whereby they need to have the relevant skills to achieve your goals. At Clever Business Websites we are able to ‘Scout’ out the opposition by conducting a competitor analysis, which can highlight which keywords are in fine form and can perform well for you.
Football strip as Website Design
Football strips are all about your team's identity and branding, which can be easily compared to Website Design. Your website needs to look impressive whilst being a strong performer for your business. We have talked about website design in previous blogs and it is so important to get your branding, colours and the navigation of your site right. Making it easy for visitors to find what they might be looking for, whilst standing out from a crowded market of competitors is vital.
Referee as Google
As with football, SEO also has rules that need to be worked to. If you don’t play by the rules, Google will penalise you in your ranking. It is important to follow the basic rules of SEO, not taking shortcuts to try and cheat the system such as the overuse of keywords or backlink buying, which can have a detrimental effect on your site.
Manager as Your Digital Marketing Executive
We believe Football Managers and Referees play a similar role to your Digital Marketing Executive.
At Clever Business Websites, our team has a wealth of knowledge in website optimisation and can offer you advice on the best tactics to deploy on your website, including options for Search Engine Optimisation, as well as other Digital Marketing options including social media, e-marketing, blogs and link building. In football, a good team needs to put in the work to achieve their objectives. With the right work happening behind the scenes of your website, you will be in a better position, with that end goal in sight.
